45th Anniversary Gala Party for the Pacific Ski Club!!!
On October 20th, we were finally able to
hold our 45th Anniversary party.
Founded on the 17th of September, 1974, we had completed one
year serving the Greater Vancouver area in 1975. We had scheduled our 45 year event in 2020,
but with the bars and restaurants closed, and the restrictions which followed,
that never came to pass until this month, October of 2022.
More than 32 past members, ranging from the late 1970s
to the present, dropped by throughout the evening and mingled with our current membership. We had many large photo boards hung up for
display all over the walls and posts.
The Pint, our kind host, permitted us to hang our Pacific Ski Club Flag (2nd
emblem) over top their new 65 inch TV.
The owners even said, “Staple it on if you like. It’s insured,” but we used straps instead. We
had photo albums from 1974 to the present; had a raffle with a grand prize
featuring an original, framed art work by Paul Calle won by Brian Boswell, and awarded 6
other prizes; and served free finger food throughout the night. The 45 year ski pin was/ is on sale, $7 for
one and two for $10 (we will have these pins for sale throughout the year at
our monthly meetings). If you missed the
event, we may bring many of these photo boards and albums (memories) to our AGM next spring,
providing everyone with more notice and another chance to see them.
The Nick White Plaque, one which used to be on
permanent display at our Whistler cabin, was front and centre—41 people have
been awarded that prize since its conception in 1985.
Lists of our past presidents were posted over framed
sports pictures. As well, we listed the ski/ snowboarding trips which our club
has run along with our sister club, the Victoria Alpine Ski Club. Since taking over as president in March of
2015, we have skied the following:
·
BC – Whistler, Mt. Washington, Sun
Peaks, Mt. McKinley, Kicking Horse, Red Mountain, White Water, Silver Star, Big
White, Apex, and Blackcomb
·
Alberta – Lake Louise, Sunshine
Village and Mt. Norquay
·
Europe –
o
Austria – Wagrain, Altenmarkt,
Zauchensee, Falchau, & Kitzbuehl
o
Romania – Poiana Brasov & Sinaia
We began snowshoeing in 2019, and we have been up to
the very top of Hollyburn at 1332m and on almost all of the Nordic Centre’s
many trails, some lit up for the night.
Grouse Mountain and Mt. Seymour are two more areas where we have taken to the
snow-clad trails.
Another social event that was started after March 2015 is our live theatre nights. It has become so popular that even I.E. members and their executive drop in every now and then on the same evening ("...just by chance," is what they claim--as always, nes pas?). These live shows, performed by the Vagabond Players Association at the Bernie Legge Theatre in Queens Park, New Westminster with an 8 p.m. curtain time have just started after being shut down for almost two years.
Our ski club along with Calgary’s Bum Biters, the
Victoria Alpine Ski Club, and I.E. have been continuing the September Long
Weekend camping trips, the OKs from the past. We have also been at E.C.
Manning Park each spring, and up the Sunshine Coast to John Henry’s in Garden Bay. Our past locations have been:
· Blue Lake Resort, Fraser Canyon (2 years)
· Anderson Creek, Fraser Canyon (2 years)
· Old Grist Mill, Keromeos ( 1 year)
· South Beach Gardens, Skaha Lake (2 years)
- Richter Pass Beach Resort, Osoyoos (1 year)
The Pacific Ski Club is alive and moving forward with
many a ski trip scheduled with our sister club, the Victoria Alpine Ski Club.
