June 4 - 8, 2020 Camping Weekend

John Henry's Resort and Marina

First Pacific Ski Club Camping trip of the 2020 season!!!

As spring comes to a close and the restrictions on travel are eased, the Pacific Ski Club and some of its members headed up the Sunshine Coast to Garden Bay.  Our destination, John Henry's Marina & Resort in Pender Harbour.

Boarding the ferry June 4th, 2020 at Horseshoe Bay, we sailed up to Langdale and then motored up the Sunshine Coast Highway to the Garden Bay exit.  A few miles in on the well paved road, you come to Pool Road and from there it is a few hundred yard before you enter the resort.  Most of us came up in RV units, but we did rent one of the lovely cabins nestled in the small bay.  Each of the RV s and the cabin was right on the ocean front and the views of the sea are spectacular.
RV campers have shower and toilet facilities just beside the office, and it is not a long walk to get access to these well kept facilities.

The resort offers full hook-up or just electrical 30 amp service, four lovely cabins and two very large homes that a group can rent on a daily or weekly basis.  The resort also offers small boats which you can rent and thereby see the area from the ocean.

A well stocked store, which offers most things you may need to camp, food, beer, wine, ice, and everything else in terms of daily necessities, is open from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. daily.
If you don;t feel like cooking but would still like a home-cooked meal, they have a restaurant with a great selection as well as a daily special.

The first night we were offered a local prawn dinner for what I recall was $18.95.  It came with crinkle-cut  fries, dip sauces and about 6 or 7 prawns that were as large as lobsters.  There were so delicious that we ordered the special two days in a row.

Even though the Blues Festival had been cancelled, we brought along three string instruments and had several afternoon and evening where everyone came by enjoyed the music being strummed .  As with most Pacific Ski Club events, a few beverages were had and our voices graced the resort and warmed our hearts.  the rain, which had been forecast, luckily stayed in Vancouver and we had sun with only a little bit of cloud the entire time.

Richard had booked us in for a round of golf for the Friday.  The Pender Harbour course features 9 holes and has a few par five holes.  I walked the course but I would recommend renting a power cart if you plan to play as there are some hills and dales in the first four holes.  Yet, it is quite enjoyable and everone had fun.  They even had the patio open with food and liquor service, a bonus when you thing everything was closed until a week ago.

Dinner on the last night was a BBQ at Allyson and Richard's modest ocean-side villa, one you can rent the next time you come up.  There are a few sundecks, a dock with a brand new ramp and 48 feet of deck to tie up your yacht, a large fire pit with 8 to 10 chairs, an outdoor hot tub, and so many sundecks I lost count.  I believe there are four bedrooms, each with its own fireplace, a dining table for ten or more guests, and a large airtight, glass fireplace in the open-space designed living room, dining room, kitchen, and bar.  You may need roller blades to get around it is so 'small'.
The view from any place in that house is right out of a post card.

Plan to visit John Henry's Marina & Resort and make your own memories.

Sechelt B.C.

On our way back from our camping weekend, we stopped along the coast at Sechelt where we watched local fishermen and crab catchers tossing out and retrieving their nets.  Quite a scenic area and just a great place to relax and stretch the legs.

Gibsons B.C.

With our fast paced world and the Sunshine Coast Highway by-passing Gibson's this quaint coast town is often missed by most B.C. tourists heading up the coast.  Yet, for a long time, the CBC ran a television series called the Beach Combers out of Gibson's, bring some fame to the area.  The local watering hole in that TV series, Molly's Reach is not only open but you can buy it for only $250,000.00 as it is listed in the Sunshine Coast Real Estate Magazine for this month.

Looking to get out of the Rat Race.  Retiring from your job and looking for a new career?  Perhaps an investment in B.C. may by what you are looking for.

Regardless, it servers great Cod or Salmon in their selection for Fish & Chips (locally caught), good local beer, and have both outdoor and indoor dining.
The entire town of Gibson's is surrounded by water, marinas, restaurants, bars, crab shacks, walkways, souvenir shops, art galleries, regular stores, and a barber shop (still closed due to the pandemic).

Plan to join us as we travel BC on tow or more camping trips.  Check out our Activities Page.
